The medical form of botulinum toxin, often referred to by the product name Botox®, is an effective treatment used to temporarily reduce or eliminate the muscle activity responsible for dynamic lines and wrinkles in the face. Botulinum toxin A is a purified neurotoxin protein produced by the Clostridium Botulinum bacterium. It acts at the junctions between nerves and muscles, to block the release of the chemical messenger (acetylcholine) which normally causes the muscles to contract.
Muscle relaxing injections
Injections of small quantities of botulinum toxin reduces muscle activity, which in turn softens skin lines and contours and gives a more refreshed appearance. Effects are not permanent, but will usually last up to four months. The treatment is effective against moderate to severe dynamic facial lines, such as forehead creases, frown lines, “crows feet” and against vertical neck bands, but usually has no effect on fine superficial skin lines or folds of excess skin.
Suitable candidates
Botulinum toxin may benefit patients requiring a light facial rejuvenation, muscle relaxation or treatment for hyperhidrosis (abnormal perspiration). Patients are generally aged from their late twenties up into their sixties, with good skin elasticity. Treatment is not recommended during pregnancy or lactation.
